Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has won the actress the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won a Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr., a policeman as well as Rita educator of Irvington High School. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark the state of New Jersey. She was also raised in her family's Baptist Church. Latifah refers to an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". Her aunt gave it to her when she was eight. Latifah was always large, at 5'10", she was the center forward on her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap collective that started her journey into beatboxing. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's original group, which included several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. The single caught the eye from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who has signed Latifah and, in 1988, released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
